Karl Chiu received his Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology in Taiwan. In 1988, he continued his studies with a major in Photography in San Francisco, where he worked as a photojournalist. After returning to Hong Kong in 1993, he became a full-time photojournalist and joined United Daily News, Apple Daily and Time Magazine successively. Since 1997, Chiu has been a freelance photographer. He co-founded the photographic studio GF6 with Wong Kan-tai in 1998. Chiu’s major exhibitions to date are “Anomie: A Photography Exhibition of Karl Chiu” (1997), “Beijing Story” (1999), “Blue Survivor: An Exhibition of Photographic Work by Karl Chiu” (2000) and “Burdening Representations – Historical Memory of China from Hong Kong” (2009). Recording everyday anecdotes and social events with blurring black-and-white images, Chiu’s works are full of personal charisma. His works are collected by the National Library of France (Department of Printing and Photography) and Hong Kong Heritage Museum.
